Hungary’s World Music Party

Wednesday, October 21st, 2015

WOMEX begins today, but I had to spend an hour processing the incredible music I heard last night at Hungary’s “Pre-Party”, the Folk and World Music Showcase Day at Fonó.  It was a stellar event that brought together 10 select bands — representing the best global music offerings from this ethnically diverse country.

My favorite discovery was Zombori.  They combine an energetic indie/rock groove with the mesmerizing vocals unique to Hungarian folk music.  It was enchanting.  Here is a short sample…please forgive the videography.  I was operating the camera with one hand and holding a glass of red wine in the other!

I also loved Babra.  They play South Slavic tambura music influenced by Hungarian, Bulgarian, Armenian and Gypsy traditions.  These adorable up-and-coming musicians played on the “Small Stage” here at the Fonó, yet they attracted a great crowd that went wild with enthusiasm.  You can’t help but jump and dance to it.

There were other wonderful bands that I will feature in a future post, including the David Yengibarian Trio, Fonó Zenekar, and Parno Graszt.  Bravo to Fonó, Hungarian Heritage House, and Hangvetö for putting this Showcase together.  On to WOMEX!
